An Online Study in the Beatitudes
This is the first section of recorded teachings we have from Jesus after He returned from 40 days of fasting and praying in the wilderness. In these words, we find short concise teaching about what it looks like to be people of God’s kingdom. This teaching begins with a passage we customarily call the Beatitudes. These are 8 statements given us by Jesus that demonstrate what it looks like to be the kingdom of God's people. These statements speak to us about being absolutely open, absolutely committed, and absolutely consistent in our walk. These traits Jesus says are the way to find real blessings in life. These traits speak to us about what it is to be people of character. When everything is done it is not our accomplishments that build our legacy. It is not what we have accumulated that builds our legacy. Our legacy, what you leave to your loved ones is a life of character. In a life of character, we find true blessing.
Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him.
And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.
“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
“Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
